The Irish racecourse at the village of Ardsallis, near to the village of Quin, was in County Clare and served a very small population. However, in the early 19th century a Friendly Club was formed in the area under the direction of Sir Edward O’Brien with the aim of improving standards and organisation at racecourses. They appointed a secretary, treasurer and elected stewards with a term of office. Despite having local stewards, they also called on the services of a professional judge at their race meetings. They introduced a diligent entry system, a feature Gold Cup race and wished to improve the breeding programme for thoroughbreds, particularly hunters.
